For more than 30 years, Pew has been a major force in engaging the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the worlds most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the worlds remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment. Pews global environmental program focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

Since 1990, Pew has worked in North America, South America and Australia to protect large and critically important terrestrial ecosystems, including rivers and other freshwater resources, coastal temperate rainforests, interior mountain ranges, the northern boreal forests, Australias Outback, and Chilean Patagonia. We work to ensure these natural systems remain bountiful, functioning, and resilient, providing essential ecological services such as clean air and clean water, sustenance and food security for local communities and more broadly for the welfare of current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, sociology, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.

In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pews ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating large scale marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. We also work to address systemic threats to the ocean, including from plastics, over-and-illegal fishing, seabed mining, and climate change.

Enduring Earth

Enduring Earth is a collaboration between Pew, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and ZOMALAB, the family office of Ben and Lucy Ana Walton. Enduring Earth works alongside nations and communities to accelerate conservation worldwide, to help address the climate and biodiversity crises and support community economic development. Enduring Earth seeks to protect and conserve our planets ocean, lands, and freshwater and secure long-term financing for conservation, economic diversification, and community prosperity. This is built on a commitment to uphold the rights of people and create opportunities for sustainable growth.

The Enduring Earth initiative is built around the innovative Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) conservation finance mechanism. A PFP is a financial model that brings together governments, Indigenous peoples and local communities, funders, and other partners to secure long-term conservation, full and sustained funding, and community benefits. Through this approach, protected places stay protected because they are collaboratively designed, locally-led, nationally supported, sustainably funded, and highly accountable.

The Enduring Earth partnership aims to complete 20 PFPs by 2030. Pew is currently co-leading four PFPs and is seeking a Senior Officer, Public Sector to support the PFP portfolio and provide direct support to PFPs.

Position Overview

The senior officer plays an important role in overseeing Pews Enduring Earth initiatives engagement with public sector funding partners including bilateral and multi-lateral institutions. Reporting to the senior director, Enduring Earth, the senior officer will work with various departments to identify and pursue public sector funding opportunities to support Pew led project finance for permanence (PFP) initiatives globally.

Located in Pews Washington, DC office, this position participates in Pews hybrid work program with core days in the office and the flexibility to telework the remaining days. Staff also enjoy four telework flex weeks per year.

Responsibilities

Lead strategic thinking for Pews engagement with public sector funding partners to support the goals and priorities of the Enduring Earth initiative and Pews programmatic ambition.

Build and/or grow existing relationships with prioritized public sector funding partners including multilateral development banks (i.e. GEF, GCF, World Bank) to identify opportunities for strategic partnerships and funding to advance Pew led project finance for permanence initiatives.

Provide insights to the PFP teams on public sector donor landscapes and advise on potential funding opportunities for the relevant project finance for permanence initiatives.

Lead the development of competitive funding proposals for public sector donors, ensuring compliance with donor guidelines and Pews policies.

Manage outside consulting firms or contractors as needed in preparing funding proposal.

Support the drafting of donor reports, and other donor materials, translating complex conservation information into clear, compelling language.

Coordinate internally with the program, partnerships, finance, and legal teams in strategy and proposal development and donor reporting.

Represent Pew at the Enduring Earth public sector working group and contribute to the design and implementation of public sector strategies and workplan to advance the goal of broader partnerships.

Represent Pew in relevant meetings and events to strengthen the organizations visibility and credibility.

Participate in activities that support Pews Environment program and Pew-wide objectives.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience working with public sector agencies including multilateral development banks and related agencies to secure funding for conservation and sustainable development projects.

Strong understanding of public sector donor priorities and processes in conservation and sustainable development.

Excellent writing and editing skills for technical and persuasive funding proposals.

Excellent project management skills.

Skilled at informing and influencing internal and external audiences through written and oral communications.

Demonstrated experience working effectively with cross-functional teams and leveraging expertise to successful completion of the project with measurable results.

Strong networking and relationship-building skills.

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.

Generally, ten years of applicable experience.

Salary Range

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pews commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay.
