Qualifications

  • Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Language: Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
  • Language: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat..

Skills

  • Candidates will be recruited to support only one of the above-mentioned Branches but might be also exposed to the work of the other Branch.

  • The Human Rights Council Branch (HRCB) serves as the Secretariat of the Human Rights Council (HRC).
  • Servicing three formal sessions each year and its special sessions, HRCB provides support to the activities of the HRC President and the Bureau throughout the year.
  • HRCB also provides support to the work of the Advisory Committee, the confidential Complaints Procedure, including servicing the Working Group on Communications and the Working Group on Situations and to the Consultative Group, which considers applications for Special Procedures mandates-holders positions.

  • The Universal Periodic Review Branch (UPRB) serves as the Secretariat of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) which is a mechanism of the HRC.
  • The UPR ensures equal treatment for every country when human rights situations are assessed.
  • More information on the UPR can be found at https://www.ohchr.org/en/hr-bodies/upr/upr-home The assignment is performed under the overall guidance of the Chiefs of HRCB and UPRB.
  • The intern reports to the Human Rights Officers responsible for the internship program within HRCB and UPRB.
  • The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; help empower people to realize their rights; and assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
