The Office of Programme Planning, Finance and Budget (OPPFB) is responsible for resource management and financial planning across the United Nations Secretariat. OPPFB prepares and manages the UN’s regular and peacekeeping budgets, monitors financial performance, develops financial regulations and policies, and advises senior management on the allocation and use of the Organization’s resources to deliver on its mandates effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Board of Auditors (the Board) comprises of the Auditor-Generals of France, China and Brazil who are mandated to conduct audits of the United Nations and its funds and programmes. Under the supervision of the Executive Secretary, a Director of External Audit or a staff member of the Board of Auditors Secretariat the intern will:

  • Perform ad-hoc tasks related to audits of the United Nations, its Funds and Programmes;
  • Attend and summarize conferences and meetings;
  • Assist in organising the annual sessions of the Board of Auditors;
  • Perform research tasks and draft documents as needed;
  • Compile statistics and prepare tables as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelors level or equivalent). We are especially interested in candidates pursuing studies in the following areas: Accounting, Mathematics, Economics, Auditing and Statistics. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent would be a benefit. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masters or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelors, Masters or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Information

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For in-person internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant visa status (such as F-1 or J-1 visa), will be required to obtain a G-4 visa for a full-time (at least 35 hours per week) internship. Candidates who are on a non-immigrant visa status as students such as F-1 or J-1 visa with an employment authorization will only be able to intern on a part-time basis.
