Qualifications

  • Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in social sciences, capacity building, capacity development, ocean governance or a related field is required.
  • Academic Qualifications: A first level university degree (Bachelors or equivalent) in these fields, combined with two (2) additional years of relevant professional experience, may be accepted instead of an advanced degree..
  • Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Language: For this job opening, English is required.

Skills

  • Knowledge of contemporary international relations and of UN system, organization and interrelationships.
  • Strong knowledge of the international law of the sea, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and related international agreements.
  • Familiarity with current legal and political developments in the international law of the sea.
  • Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; and demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
  • Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; and uses time efficiently..
  • Proficiency in computer based skills, including Internet use, email and Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, is desirable.
