Youth Collaboratory is inviting applications for the position of Controller. Serving as a member of the Leadership Team, the Controllers primary responsibility is to ensure Youth Collaboratorys financial strategies, tactics, infrastructure, and capabilities are strong, aligned and fully realized to support the organizations strategic direction and goals. They will also be instrumental in creating a culture of trust and accountability, transparent communication, and continuous improvement. The Controller is a full-time exempt position, reports to the Deputy Director of Administration and supervises up to 2 direct reports. The starting salary range for this role is $102K-107K plus benefits. #LI-Remote

Primary Responsibilities

Support the Leadership Team in Operational Design and Management

The Controller will assist the Deputy Director of Administration with creation, monitoring, and assessment of financial plans to include analysis and projections of revenue sources, use of expenses, indirect cost reimbursement, cash flow requirements, and debt reduction. They will work closely with the leadership team to analyze financial results and assist with operational planning for proper financial management to ensure compliance with funding agencies and donor restrictions while utilizing resources appropriately.

Lead Day-to-Day Operations of Functional Accounting Oversight and Management

The Controller will be responsible for the overall administration of financial transactions, accrual accounting records, and reporting. They will oversee and manage preparation and administration of financial transactions, accrual accounting records, and reporting in compliance with internal financial policies, general accepted accounting principles (GAAP), applicable governmental regulations, terms and conditions of grants/contracts, and accreditation standards for non-profits.

Manage Reporting and Financial Analysis for Monitoring Agency Financial Health

The Controller will oversee and manage preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports for presentation to senior management and board of directors including reports with variance analysis (e.g., balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow) that include appropriate and meaningful metrics to monitor and assess the overall financial health of the organization, donor restricted funds activity, cash flow projections, and any other reports that will assist senior management in making operational and financial decisions. They will collaborate with the Deputy Director of Administration and other leadership team members to design and develop financial and statistical reporting for all grants and contracts and develop and implement action plans for the overall financial health of the organization.

Support and Sustain Quality Budgeting and Forecasting

The Controller will work in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Administration to prepare an annual operating budget, including the design and execution of the process. They will work closely with department managers to gather information that ensures the incorporation of program goals and objectives throughout the budget development process. They will oversee the completion of the approved budget process within an appropriate financial reporting system.

Provide Leadership for All Audit Functions and Federal Grant Maintenance

The Controller, in conjunction with the Deputy Director of Administration, will design, review, and maintain policies and procedures and internal control systems. This includes the development of action plans relative to internal control needs, maintenance of grant/contract files, as well as maintenance and improvement of all aspects of financial operations. They will be responsible for the preparation and oversight of external financial audits.

The Controller will play a leading role in ensuring effective management of Youth Collaboratorys federally funded grants. Activities may include, and are not limited to, budget preparation/modifications, requests for grant payments, and budget reporting as conducted through designated Federal reporting systems. They will ensure compliance with Federal grant guidance and regulations, such as oversight of monitoring (subgrantee and compliance grants), onboarding, SMFR processing, conducting fiscal monitoring, and providing support for Federal grant audits.

  • Able to see the interconnectedness between quality programming and administrative excellence. This includes an ability to translate financial concepts to – and effectively collaborate with – programmatic colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
  • Technology savvy with knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to work with a variety of stakeholders.

Experience

  • BS/BA in Accounting/Finance required, advanced degree required.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of Controller/Finance Director level experience, including managing the accounting for a $3M to $6M social service, intermediary or similar nonprofit organization.
  • An additional 5+ years of progressive experience in general accounting with solid knowledge of GAAP nonprofit requirements.
  • Experience in federal funding, specifically with 2 CFR 200 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting including but not limited to:
    • Experience with audit and contract and grant compliance.
    • Experience with revenue cycle and month end close.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, and financial management software (QuickBooks preferred). Experience with Salesforce and SAP Concur a plus.
  • Experience with Paylocity or similar Time and Labor …
