About the role
The Pulitzer Center seeks a dynamic program leader to execute public programming that amplifies the impact of our journalists’ work and strengthens connections with communities across the United States. As Program Manager – Outreach, you’ll design and lead diverse community-facing initiativesfrom expert convenings to film festivals to grassroots partnershipsthat bring critical global issues into local conversations and expand our reach into underrepresented regions and communities.
This role combines strategic partnership development with hands-on program execution. You’ll cultivate relationships with community organizations, cultural institutions, and media outlets while overseeing the operational details that make programming successful. You’ll also lead monitoring and evaluation efforts to ensure our outreach work drives meaningful impact, and you’ll mentor an Outreach Coordinator, building team capacity as we scale our community engagement.

Responsibilities
Program Execution & Partnership Development
- Develop and execute grant-affiliated outreach projects and initiatives, determining budget needs and partnership strategies
- Organize diverse events, workshops, and activities with partners including expert convenings, film festivals, exhibitions, panel discussions, and community dialogues
- Identify, facilitate, and maintain relationships with community partners, media outlets, cultural institutions, libraries, and civic organizations to create programming and expand organizational visibility
- Design and implement Pulitzer Center outreach initiatives aligned with organizational impact goals and strategic priorities
- Create programming pathways with potential partners and pursue formal partnership agreements
- Focus intentionally on expanding connections within underrepresented regions and communities
Monitoring & Evaluation Leadership
- Research and develop survey and evaluation processes in collaboration with Engagement team colleagues
- Implement monitoring and evaluation systems for outreach programs to assess reach, engagement, and impact
- Curate and analyze program data to generate insights and learnings for internal teams, partners, and public audiences
- Develop recommendations for program improvements based on evaluation findings and implement strategic adjustments
- Contribute to organizational learning and continuous improvement culture
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Directly supervise the Outreach Coordinator, providing regular coaching, performance feedback, and professional development support
- Guide project priorities, timelines, and strategic approaches to ensure successful execution of outreach initiatives
- Coordinate work plan development and accountability with the Outreach Coordinator in alignment with team and organizational goals
- Foster a collaborative, learning-oriented team environment
Administrative & Financial Oversight
- Oversee processing of payments and documentation including journalist honoraria, event expenses, and partnership agreements
- Track financial commitments and ensure budget alignment with program goals
- Maintain organized systems for program documentation and reporting
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Initiate opportunities for cross-team collaboration and pursue collaborative programming across Engagement, Editorial, Communications, and Development teams
- Provide peer support and informal mentorship to team members
- Contribute organizational knowledge and outreach expertise to advance collective goals
Participation in Organizational Culture & Values
- Engage in task forces, training sessions, committees, special projects, organizational events, and activities that support the Pulitzer Center’s mission and culture
- Participate actively in organizational planning processes
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 4-6 years of progressive experience in program management, community engagement, nonprofit programming, or related fields
- Proven track record developing and executing successful public programs or community-facing initiatives
- Strong project management skills with ability to juggle multiple initiatives simultaneously while maintaining quality and attention to detail
- Partnership development experience with demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse organizations and stakeholders
