We have an excellent opportunity for a motivated and bright individual to join our team as a Bookkeeper / Finance Assistant, helping to sustain the day-to-day financial life of our community.
About the Role
This is an in-person, non-exempt, assistant-level position (34 hours per week) supporting day-to-day bookkeeping, billing, and administrative functions within the synagogues Finance Department. The role works closely with the Finance & Member Services Account Manager and reports to the Director of Operations & Finance. The ideal candidate is a friendly, reliable team player with strong computer skills, a high level of accuracy and organization, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities

- Process accounts payable and receivable, including billing, payments, discounts, and past-due follow-up
- Manage recurring charges and billing adjustments in ShulCloud; record transactions in QuickBooks
- Assist with basic bank and credit card reconciliations
- Maintain organized digital and paper financial documentation
- Support membership renewals, financial aid, and appeal processes with professionalism and sensitivity
- Assist with event reconciliations, membership billing, and other finance-related projects
- Provide general administrative support and respond to member and vendor inquiries
Qualifications

- Bachelors degree required; Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field a plus, but significant experience in a similar setting can substitute
- 13+ years of bookkeeping experience, ideally in a nonprofit or religious organization
- Familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds
- Proficient with accounting/bookkeeping software (QuickBooks required; ShulCloud or similar nonprofit systems a plus)
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications
- Detail-oriented, organized, and reliable, with strong follow-through
- Patient, adaptable communicator, comfortable working in a shared office environment with varied work styles
- High level of integrity, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information
- Familiarity with Judaism and Jewish culture a plus
Hours & Compensation

- $28$30 per hour (DOE)
- 34 hours per week, in person
- MondayThursday: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM
- Friday: 9:00 AM 4:00 PM
- Non-exempt; overtime eligible per California law
Additional Information
Employment is contingent upon a background check and verification of work authorization. Position is primarily office-based with extended computer use.
