About the Counterculture Museum

The Counterculture Museum is a nonprofit cultural institution in Haight Ashbury. We explore social movements, art, music, and ideas that reshaped society from the Beat Generation through the 1960s and beyond and connect them directly to the world we live in today.

We are seeking a creative, strategic, and execution-focused Marketing & Social Media Manager to help grow our audience, increase engagement, drive museum visits, strengthen and manage our membership program, and support fundraising through compelling digital storytelling.

Role Overview

This role is ideal for someone who is highly creative and organized, with strong follow-through and attention to detail. You will be responsible for developing and executing the museums social media strategy across platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and others while owning the management and promotion of our membership program

For marketing and social media, you will create and produce original video and visual content including reels, short-form videos, interviews, event coverage, group tours, and more to build an engaged community of followers, fans, visitors, members, and donors.

This is a hands-on role requiring comfort with filming, editing, posting, analyzing content performance, and managing membership operations and communications.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Planning & Membership Management

  • Develop and implement a cohesive social media strategy aligned with the museums mission and goals
  • Manage and improve the museums existing membership program, including securing new members, and enhancing renewals, benefits, and communications
  • Establish content themes, series, and campaigns that build awareness, engagement, visitation, and membership and donor growth
  • Create and manage a content calendar across all active platforms
  • Identify opportunities for growth, partnerships, trends, and timely content

Content Creation & Production

  • Create original short-form video content for reels, stories, and TikTok
  • Film and edit interviews with artists, activists, guests, and community members
  • Capture live events, group tours, exhibitions, and behind-the-scenes moments
  • Design graphics and visuals using Canva and similar tools
  • Write engaging captions, calls to action, and storytelling copy

Platform Management

  • Manage weekly posting and engagement on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and other relevant platforms
  • Monitor comments, messages, membership inquiries, and community engagement
  • Stay current on platform trends, tools, and algorithm changes and adjust strategy as needed

Growth, Analytics & Optimization

  • Track performance metrics (reach, engagement, follower growth, conversions)
  • Track membership growth, renewals, and engagement metrics
  • Adjust strategy based on data and insights
  • Support campaigns that drive ticket sales, group tours, memberships, and donations
  • Provide regular reporting and insights to leadership

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and museum team
  • Coordinate with events, exhibitions, membership initiatives, and fundraising efforts
  • Align messaging with the museums educational and cultural mission
