Beyond Literacy (BeLit) is Philadelphia’s largest adult literacy nonprofit. We pride ourselves on high quality service to over 1500 striving adults annually through cost-free educational services including English language learning, GED-prep, digital literacy, family literacy, and career preparation. Parttime staff may work daytime or evening schedules, either onsite or remotely. Fulltime staff typically work onsite up 3-4 days per week and work most Fridays remotely.
JOB SUMMARY
Instructors serve as members of the BeLit Education Team. There are up to two positions available working with adults (18+) developing, adapting and delivering Math and Science instruction aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards and preparing students to pass the high school equivalency exam (GED or HiSET) and prepare for standardized aptitude assessments.
Current hiring needs include:
Math/Science Instructor(s) PT
Schedule:Classes typically meet twice per week (Mon/Wed, Tue/Thurs, Wed/Fri or some other combination of days). Morning classes usually meet from 9:00 – 12:00, afternoon classes usually meet from 1:00 – 4:00 and evening classes either meet from 5:30 – 8:00 PM or 6:00 – 8:30 PM. Currently, two classes are available – PreGED Math on Mon/Wed evenings and GED Math/Science on Mon/Wed afternoons.

PA Criminal history and/or FBI clearances are required.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning & Instruction
- Review student/learner data to prepare lessons targeting identified instructional needs.
- Instruct learners at various educational functioning levels (EFL).
- Integrate technology and supplemental activities into classroom instruction.
- Monitor learner progress using formal and informal assessments.
- Prepare progress reports and learning plans for all students after summative assessments.
Data Tracking & Recording
- Maintain accurate and timely attendance and other records, e.g., daily attendance sign-ins, weekly attendance entry, reporting of core and secondary goals and outcomes.
- Maintain complete, accurate and secure student folders.
Professional Development & Staff Meetings
- Engage in job-embedded professional development to improve student outcomes.
- Attend required assessment training and refresher courses.
- Actively participate in staff, program and education team meetings.
Partnership Goals
- Maintain a positive working relationship with partner program team.
- Check and respond promptly to email and voice mail messages (within 1 business day).
- Work collaboratively to achieve program goals.
- Actively participate in partner agency meetings.
- Regularly communicate challenges, proposed solutions and successes to supervisor and partner agency.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in a Math- or STEM-related field of study required.
- Minimum of one year’s classroom teaching experience required (may include internship, volunteer teaching assignment, or small group tutoring).
- Experience in adult education or alternative education preferred.
- Experience using remote and/or hybrid teaching platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Google Classroom) preferred.
- Knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards, and standards-based lesson planning.
- Experience with Access, e-Data, Salesforce, or Excel used as a database (or other data management systems) preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to support the use of a variety of technology and courseware in the classroom, such as Khan Academy, Essential Education, IXL and KET Fast Forward desirable.

- Ability to work as a member of a team and maintain a student-focused, solutions-oriented outlook.
- Ability to work well with diverse populations and develop positive relationships with students, colleagues and partners in the field.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong oral communication and presentation skills.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite; experience using Microsoft Office 365/SharePoint a plus.
