Disability Rights Washington (DRW) seeks aPublic Policy and Advocacy Coordinator. The position will coordinate all legislative lobbying, coordinate public policy within Disability Rights Washington, develop strategic alliances with other policy organizations, and advise on policy and politics. This position will be based in Washington State (you must currently reside in WA State, or plan to relocate) and will be done in a hybrid role (in the office and/or at home).

Job Overview

The Public Policy and Advocacy Coordinator is a key contributor to Disability Rights Washingtons mission to protect and advocate for the human, legal, and civil rights of people with disabilities while advancing dignity, equality, and self-determination.

The Public Policy and Advocacy Coordinator will serve Washingtons disability community in a pivotal role by advocating for the interests of the disability community, educating the disability community about how to impact policy directly, and facilitating the disability community as it exerts its public policy making power. This position will develop and implement strategic public policy initiatives, foster positive relationships with local, state, and federal government entities, conduct research and analysis on critical policy and budget issues, develop and disseminate information to policy makers and the public, coordinate DRWs efforts to support the disability community in advocating for the issues important to them, participate in advocacy through coalitions and alliances, educate policy makers and lobby on issues of importance to people with disabilities.

This job does not involve unsupervised contact with vulnerable adults or children.

The salary range for this position is $81k to $86k, depending on experience.

The position is intended for someone with a minimum of 3 years of experience in Public Policy and/or Advocacy, preferably supporting disability inclusion and justice.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership in implementing DRWs public policy efforts at the state and federal levels.
  • Working with other teams at DRW, coordinates the planning, development, and implementation of DRWs overall public policy agenda; assuring that DRWs mission, priorities and interests in protecting the rights of people with disabilities are promoted.
  • Educates policymakers on policy issues, legislation, and public policy options, along with the potential impact on Washingtonians with disabilities.
  • Coordinates DRW lobbying efforts with the legislature and others
  • Monitors, tracks, and prepares informational testimony before committees and/or public hearings consistent with DRWs mission and values.
  • Analyzes proposed legislation and regulatory/policy changes impacting the rights of individuals with disabilities. Systematically tracks legislation and develops/recommends official positions to be taken by DRW

Conflict Resolution

  • Effectively utilizes conflict resolution and advocacy skills to resolve both internal and external conflicts

Timely Paperwork and Reporting

  • Submits all required reports, timesheets, and other documentation in an accurate and timely manner

Work Conditions

  • Movement to and within the Capitol building in Olympia when in session, and as needed/requested.
  • Travel may be required to attend in-person meetings at the DRW main office in Seattle, to meet with legislators and other invested parties and partners. Overnight travel may be required for this position.

Workload Monitoring

Maintain a reasonably ambitious workload and keep their immediate supervisor informed when there is insufficient work to perform and when there is a risk that work wont be completed on a timely basis.
