Program Manager – Community Outreach & Wellness (African American)

Organization Overview

The Womens Cancer Resource Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women diagnosed with cancer through compassionate, holistic programs and services that address emotional, physical, and practical needs. We are committed to advancing health equity and ensuring that underserved and historically marginalized communities have meaningful access to culturally responsive cancer support services.

Position Summary

The Program Manager Community Outreach & Wellness plays a key role in expanding access to supportive services for African American women and nonbinary individuals impacted by cancer. Reporting to the Deputy Director, this position focuses on outreach and community education, development of culturally tailored wellness programming, and supervision of navigation staff and volunteers. The Program Manager works to reduce barriers to care, build trust within African American communities, and ensure services are culturally responsive.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The role is based in Berkeley, California. Regular onsite work is required due to the community-based nature of the position, with limited remote work available as appropriate. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to meet program needs.

Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach & Education

  • Build and maintain relationships with African American communityserving organizations, healthcare providers, faith-based groups, and community leaders
  • Conduct outreach and deliver presentations in community settings to increase awareness of available cancer support services
  • Represent the organization at community events, health fairs, and partner meetings
  • Collaborate with communications staff to develop and adapt outreach materials that are culturally responsive and aligned with the needs and experiences of the African American community

Culturally Responsive Program Development

  • In collaboration with the navigation team, plan, implement, and oversee culturally responsive wellness programs for African American women and nonbinary individuals with cancer, adapting programs to address emerging unmet needs identified through direct client engagement.
  • Integrate community input, lived experience, and best practices to inform program design
  • Ensure programs promote health equity and address barriers such as language access, transportation, and cultural stigma
  • Coordinate program logistics including facilitators, schedules, materials, and participant communications

Navigation Staff & Volunteer Supervision

  • Proactively engage in learning the navigation role, including client needs, lived experiences, and community resources, to support navigator effectiveness and develop strategic community partnerships that reduce barriers and close gaps in care
  • Supervise and support a navigation staff and volunteer team of 46 to ensure effective, client-centered delivery of direct services
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers supporting outreach, wellness programs, and navigation services
  • Foster a supportive, culturally humble, and trauma-informed team environment
  • Ensure staff and volunteers adhere to organizational policies and best practices

Data, Evaluation & Collaboration

  • Track program participation, outcomes, and community impact related to African Americanfocused services
  • Support grant reporting and data collection related to health equity and outreach initiatives
  • Work closely with the Deputy Director and cross-functional teams to align programs with organizational goals
  • Participate in organizational planning and continuous improvement efforts

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in public health, social work, community health, nonprofit management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience, which may include community-based or lived experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in community outreach, program management, or social services
  • Experience working with African American communities and addressing health disparities
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff and/or volunteers
  • Strong public speaking and community engagement skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with individuals impacted by cancer, chronic illness, or womens health
  • Experience developing culturally responsive or equity-centered programs
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and community-based approaches

Compensation & Benefits

WCRC offers a generous benefits package, which includes 100% coverage of medical, dental and vision; a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan, with 2% of salary employer contribution; long-term disability; vacation and sick time; and thirteen paid agency holidays and a floating holiday for your birthday.

Salary range:$78,000$80,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
