Neighborhood Survants is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Bookkeeper to support the financial management of our growing nonprofit organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of standard bookkeeping practices and demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit accounting, IRS compliance, and California state tax requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
  • Record and reconcile bank and credit card transactions
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Assist with grant tracking and reporting requirements
  • Prepare monthly financial statements (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
  • Support annual budget preparation and monitoring
  • Ensure compliance with IRS nonprofit regulations and California state requirements
  • Prepare documentation for Form 990 and coordinate with CPA as needed
  • Maintain organized digital financial records
  • Support financial transparency and internal controls

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in bookkeeping (minimum 35 years preferred)
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of IRS regulations applicable to 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Familiarity with California nonprofit compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks Online preferred)
  • Strong understanding of fund accounting principles
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills

**This is a 1099 independent contractor role.
