One of our important tools is our new public Shelter Directory a centralized, accurate, and accessible resource for service providers and individuals seeking safe housing options.

Position Summary

Better Angels is seeking a relationship-oriented, detail-driven Shelter Validation Associate to conduct in-person visits to shelters across Los Angeles County and ensure our directory reflects accurate, current information and representative photos. This is a field-based, short-term contract role ideal for someone who is available immediately and ready to contribute meaningful work from day one. You will visit shelter sites, build rapport with staff, validate program details, and ensure every listing in our directory is correct, complete, and up-to-date. You are not just collecting data you are strengthening the reliability of a trusted public resource.

What Youll Do

  • Conduct in-person site visits to shelters throughout Los Angeles County (mileage reimbursed)
  • Build positive working relationships with shelter directors and program staff
  • Document services offered, eligibility requirements, populations served, referral processes, and bed capacity
  • Validate information directly with on-site leadership
  • Complete and submit all required data fields in our designated platform or Excel tracker
  • Ensure entries are accurate, complete, and non-duplicative
  • Collaborate with internal team members and volunteers assigned to Service Planning Areas (SPAs)

Most site visits will be pre-scheduled for you, though some outreach and scheduling may be required.

  • You are a warm, professional communicator who builds trust quickly. Youre organized, punctual, and comfortable navigating diverse communities across Los Angeles County.
  • You likely bring prior experience in social services, field outreach, housing navigation, public health, research, or community-based work.
  • You are comfortable asking thoughtful questions, documenting details precisely, and representing Better Angels with professionalism and empathy.

Qualifications

  • Experience in paid or volunteer social services, outreach, or site-based data collection
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort engaging efficiently with busy working people.
  • Ability to travel across LA County (valid CA drivers license and reliable transportation required)
  • Comfortable using Google Drive, spreadsheets, and mobile tools
  • Highly organized, dependable, and detail-oriented
  • Interest in, or familiarity with, the LA homeless services landscape

Preferred

  • Experience in housing navigation, community services, or public health outreach
  • Lived experience with homelessness or housing insecurity (welcomed and valued)

Location

Los Angeles County (In-Person Front-Line Role)

Status: Contract | Part-Time

Compensation: Per validated site, equivalent to approximately $22$35/hour depending on experience and pace.

Duration:Beginning in March | Estimated 3-month engagement
