The Housing Rights Center (“HRC”) is seeking aRental Assistance Intake Screenerto serve residents of Los Angeles County to help tenants apply for rental assistance. The Housing Rights Center (HRC) serves L.A. City and County along with Ventura County. Our mission is to actively support and promote fair housing through education and advocacy, to the end that all persons have the opportunity to secure the housing they desire and can afford, without discrimination.
The Rental Assistance Intake Screener will work a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of two (2) days expected in-office. They may also be expected to work on occasion at other Los Angeles area locations (including our main office and Pasadena), on an as-needed basis to help provide coverage for walk-in services.This is a full-time, temporary position that may transition to full-time, permanent*.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor incoming referrals for rental assistance and timely engage in screening process;
- Conduct client intake interviews and related follow-up conversations, adapting communication approaches depending on clients needs;
- Track client intake across several reporting tools and update client information.
- Maintain and organize documents and information from intake and archive files;
- Participate in either Prevention Team (in-person) and/or StayHoused LA or HRC workshops/events as needed;
- Follow-up with clinic/workshop attendees to distribute relevant resources and conduct rental assistance screening as applicable;
- Provide timesheet reports and update case management reports monthly.
- Attend weekly team meetings, weekly individual meetings, and monthly staff meetings;
- Ensure tenants have the necessary documents to submit their rental assistance application, which may include assisting applicants to scan, and upload required documentation.
- Respond to tenant calls and emails to provide them with information on various legal issues and/or direct to other resources as appropriate.
- Maintain a hybrid schedule at either HRCs Los Angeles or Pasadena offices;
- Provide back-up support with walk-ins during in-office days, as needed;
- Stay informed of current fair housing and landlord-tenant laws.
- Perform other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluency in English and Spanish;
- A demonstrated sincere interest in helping others;
- Strong people and customer service skills;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent reliable and detail oriented time management and organizational skills;
- Good problem-solving skills and proactive communication;
- Ability to adjust to new information or changes in processes;
- Computer literate, especially with the Microsoft suite;
- Case management experience preferred;
- Experience in interviewing and providing trauma-informed assistance preferred;
- Knowledge of landlord/tenant laws preferred but not necessary.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
- Salary range is $52,000-$54,000, depending on experience. HRC offers an excellent benefits package including health, vision, and dental insurance. A 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution is available after one year of employment. A generous paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave package is also provided.
- This position is part of a special program created using designated funds. There is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond June 31, 2027.
