THE ORGANIZATION
The Learning Rights Law Center (LRLC) is a non-profit organization that provides direct legal services to students who are not receiving an equitable public education, runs an Education Rights Clinic for broad legal consultation support, and engages in a variety of community training and outreach efforts to further the organizations mission and goals. LRLC is located near downtown Los Angeles, but is presently functioning in a hybrid capacity. This position will require in-person attendance at program events. The organization currently focuses its efforts on the most vulnerable and low-income K-12 students in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.
MISSION
Learning Rights Law Center fights to achieve education equity for underserved families in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. We provide free legal representation, advice, advocacy and training to families and communities whose children, as a consequence of disability or discrimination, have been denied equal access to a public education.
POSITION SUMMARY
TIGER is a hands-on, parent Know-Your-Rights program designed and taught by Learning Rights, to foster the tools of families in need so that they may successfully advocate within the special education system. The TIGER Outreach Assistant with the TIGER team to support project plans and ensure all TIGER program events and related outreach efforts are executed to meet expected goals and outcomes. This role has tremendous opportunity for growth.
The starting rate for this role is $21.38 an hour.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual English/Spanish (fluent in both written and spoken) required;
- Ability to work fulltime, including
- some Saturdays;
- Self-motivated leader with strong interpersonal skills who can work independently as well as part of team;
- Excellent communication and organizational skills;
- General tech fluency, with the ability to quickly learn new programs as needed and willingness to self-study and/or undergo a recommended course of study to become familiar with current or newly adopted programs
- Ability to multitask, tackle problems as they arise, and work with deadlines;
- Experience conducting community outreach and developing outreach materials;
- Experience working with parents and/or minority communities, students with disabilities, and other disenfranchised communities;
- Ability to relate easily and respectfully with parents and caregivers from marginalized communities;
- Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion;
- College degree or high school diploma with 2-3 years of relevant professional experience;
- Proficiencywith Zoom and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- Proficiency with Canva or ability to learn;
- Proficiency with social media platforms, such as Facebook and/or Instagram; and
- Must have own transportation, valid Drivers License and car insurance; and
- Willingness to assist with other tasks as needed.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
TIGER PROGRAM
- Assist with the preparation, distribution and processing of student applications;
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of student program registration and class attendance;
- Assist with staffing virtual and in-person TIGER classes and related events, including TIGER Know
- Your
- Rights, TIGER Classes with regional centers, TIGER Enrichment classes with psycho-educational consultant, and TIGER Graduation;
- Maintain and update student contact lists;
- Assist with planning, promoting and carrying out TIGER classes and related program events;
- Communicate with parents and community members regarding class updates and program reminders;
- Prepare and update PowerPoint presentations;
- Assist in the preparation and distribution of TIGER Know-Your-Rights participation certificates;
- Translate class materials as needed;
- Assist with interpretation of TIGER classes as needed;
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
- Assist with strategic planning and community relationship building in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties;
- Conduct outreach on behalf of Learning Rights Law Center & TIGER Program to stakeholders and community partners;
- Represent the organization at meetings, events and community resource fairs;
- Communicate with parents, stakeholders, and community partners about program and services;
- Manage program communications and social media presence by creating and posting content, as well as engaging with student requests via social media.
