The Vice President of Finance & Operations serves as Nests senior leader overseeing financial management and core business systems. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer with support by a fractional Finance Consultant, this role ensures that Nests financial health, compliance practices, and internal operations effectively support strategic growth and mission delivery. This position blends strong financial leadership with operational oversight, building scalable systems that enable a growing, multi-revenue nonprofit organization.
Role Autonomy & Expectations
Vice Presidents at Nest are senior functional leaders responsible for translating organizational and functional strategy into portfolio execution. They lead teams, build systems, and ensure high-quality delivery of priorities within their scope. Vice Presidents inform and influence strategy but do not set organization-level strategy.
Major Roles and Responsibilities
(30%) Financial Management & Reporting
- Lead all financial reporting and accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards
- Serve as executive owner of the Sage Intacct platform, overseeing optimization, reporting infrastructure, and process improvements
- Assess and strengthen financial systems, dashboards, and reporting tools used across the organization
- Oversee preparation and timely presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Support in presenting to the Board Finance Committee, preparing financial reports, forecasts, and risk analysis
- Lead the annual audit and Form 990 process, serving as principal contact for external auditors
- Maintain strong internal controls over accounting transactions and financial procedures
- Oversee reporting on earned revenue streams, deferred revenue, and assets released from restriction
(30%) Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Lead development of the Annual Operating Budget in partnership with the COO, Finance Consultant, and Executive Director
- Manage monthly forecasting, variance analysis, and organizational cash flow planning
- Provide forward-looking financial modeling and scenario analysis to support strategic decision-making
- Ensure all organizational revenue and expenses are accurately mapped to the approved budget
- Supervise the PT Bookkeeper to ensure timely and accurate transaction processing
(10%) Financial Operations & Compliance
- Oversee payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and invoicing systems
- Ensure appropriate approval processes and segregation of duties for outgoing payments
- Manage annual tax filings, including 1099 reporting
- Serve as liaison to banking institutions, insurance providers, and investment managers
- Monitor liquidity and reserve balances and provide recommendations to leadership
(10%) Grant Management & Revenue Partnership
- Lead financial integration of grant and earned revenue tracking into monthly budget reviews
- Work across the organization to develop program-specific and restricted grant budgets
- Provide cost analysis and financial insight to support program sustainability and revenue planning
(20%) Operations & Administrative Leadership
- Manage and mentor the Finance & Operations team, including a PT Bookkeeper & PT Operations Manager
- Develop, document, and continuously improve financial and operational policies and procedures
- Support quarterly Finance Committee meetings and participate in Board of Trustees meetings
- Ensure financial information is appropriately reflected in public reporting, including Nests website
- Oversee execution of IT/cybersecurity vendor scope, ensuring service quality, contract compliance, and timely resolution of technical issues
