Full Job Description

We value our volunteers and seek to ensure their diverse roles are rewarding and beneficial to all. Waythrough holds the Investors in Volunteers accreditation. BetterLives is the commissioned community drug and alcohol provision for Islington. It provides a range of support, interventions and treatments for those wanting to make positive changes to their drug and/or alcohol use, as well raising awareness and supporting family members. The role: Volunteer Recovery Workers play a key part in supporting clients to engage with services, develop their strengths, and work toward their personal recovery goals. This role is ideal for volunteers who want to gain experience in frontline support, develop therapeutic and communication skills, and contribute to improving outcomes for individuals navigating complex challenges. Core tasks: Supporting existing service users in their recovery journey. Facilitate or cofacilitate structured activities, workshops, or group programmes. Participate in relevant induction, mandatory, and ongoing training sessions. To assist workers client appointments where appropriate. Establish therapeutic relationships with clients. Refer and signpost to specialist agencies when required by workers Share own skills/experience. For this role, we are looking for: Empathy, reliability, and a nonjudgemental approach. Good communication and active listening skills. Confidence or willingness to work with people experiencing substance use, offending behaviour, trauma, and/or mental health challenges. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality. Commitment to reflective practice and engaging in supervision. Basic IT skills and willingness to learn new systems. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good organisational skills and punctuality. Understanding of how life experiences can affect wellbeing. A genuine interest in Waythroughs mission, values, and approach. Lived experience is welcomed but not required.
