Job Summary
UNDP's Nature Hub seeks a Programme Coordinator for Integrated Landscape Management (ILM), an IPSA-10 level home-based position. The Coordinator will support the Senior Technical Advisor (based in Istanbul) in shaping the strategic direction and coordinating actions for Output 3 (ILM Pillar) of the Nature Pledge Programme. This involves strengthening UNDP's engagement with ILM concepts, managing partnerships, coordinating Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL), and contributing to UNDP's global initiatives on nature, climate, and sustainable development. The role requires a candidate who can work remotely from their home base and is expected to undertake multiple international mission travels per year.
Office/Unit/Project Description
Within the GPN, the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) has the responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. BPPS’ Hubs on Nature, Climate, Energy, Waste and Chemicals work with governments, civil society, and private sector partners to integrate these concerns into national planning and support country obligations under Multilateral Environmental Agreements. This multi-billion-dollar portfolio advances crosscutting themes like innovative finance, digital transformation, human rights, and gender equality.
Under BPPS, the newly established UNDP Nature Hub leads the organization’s work to put nature at the forefront of development efforts, advancing nature-based solutions and scaling up solutions for sustainable management of natural resources. The Nature Hub is the arrowhead of UNDP’s commitment to the Nature Pledge, aimed to support countries in achieving their goals under the Global Biodiversity Framework. Output 3 of the Nature Pledge Programme, which this role coordinates, encompasses strategic actions towards integrated landscape management (ILM) to secure the resilience of communities and ecosystems.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Programme Coordinator works under the overall supervision and leadership of the Senior Technical Advisor (STA) for Ecosystems and Biodiversity and Global Thematic Lead for the ILM pillar. The Programme Coordinator will work closely with the STA to:
- Coordinate the development and strategic direction of the entire Output/Pillar 3 (i.e., the ILM Pillar) of the Nature Pledge Programme.
- Coordinate ILM Pillar’s efforts to strengthen UNDP’s strategic understanding and engagement with substantive technical issues relating to ILM.
- Coordinate development and management of internal and external partnerships and collaboration around ILM themes.
- Coordinate the Nature Hub’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning on ILM, including key communities of practice.
- Contribute substantively to strategy development for UNDP’s engagement with global initiatives and events.
- Stay updated with the latest trends and best practices in ILM and landscape restoration.
Lead Innovation, Strategic Leadership, Policy Dialogue of Output / Pillar 3 (ILM Pillar):
- Coordinate strategic engagement with global stakeholders (UN agencies, NGOs, scientific institutions) on ILM.
- Initiate development of initiatives under Output 3 for implementing global agreements.
- Participate in forums to contribute UNDP positioning and stay updated on trends.
- Coordinate inputs into UNDP’s global and regional strategies relevant to the ILM Pillar.
- Coordinate inputs into strategic UNDP thematic policy position papers and internal briefing notes on ILM.
- Lead on policy analysis and development of technical tools and guidance on ILM.
Lead Partnership Development, Advocacy and Resource Mobilization:
- Coordinate development of UNDP’s strategic partnerships on ILM and related themes.
- Foster partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, local communities, and academic institutions.
- Act as technical liaison between UNDP and partners.
- Support identification of funding sources and participate in dialogues with partners.
Monitor and report on progress in implementing project activities and achieving targets:
- Lead implementation of programme monitoring, evaluation, and results framework.
- Coordinate preparation of corporate, donor, and government reports.
Facilitate Learning, Knowledge Management and Self Development:
- Coordinate development and implementation of MEL plan for Output 3.
- Lead knowledge management and communications for Output 3.
- Initiate production of communication pieces showcasing impacts.
- Coordinate inputs to Nature Hub’s efforts in capturing lessons and best practices.
- Contribute to peer reviews and technical quality improvement.
- Lead preparation and delivery of ILM Pillar thematic knowledge sharing events.
The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary.
Institutional Arrangement
The incumbent will work remotely from his/her home-base. The incumbent will report to and directly be supervised by the STA/Thematic Lead on ILM based in Istanbul, Türkiye. Given the global consultations, the incumbent is expected to be reasonably flexible with availability across time zones and will be responsible for providing her/his own workstation and reliable internet.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental or Natural Sciences, Geography, Natural Resource Management, Development Studies, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Economics, Social Sciences, International Relations, or other closely related field is required. OR
- A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree) in the said fields with two additional years of qualifying work experience will be given due consideration in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years (with Master’s degree) or 7 years (with Bachelor's degree) of relevant experience working on integrated landscape and ecosystems management; climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation.
Required skills and competencies:
- Experience in project and program design for addressing environmental challenges such as land and ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change.
- Demonstrated experience in designing initiatives and programmes according to a theory of change, logical framework or other scheme which designs outputs in support of broader outcomes and overall objectives.
- Experience in coordinating/supervising team efforts to deliver strategic initiatives or programmes against budgets and timelines.
- Experience in coordinating research and analysis of technical information and stakeholder inputs towards development of projects and initiatives, including risk screening, work planning, budgeting and M&E planning, in line with RBM principles.
- At least 5 years of experience in project management or project/programme development or coordination/implementation in the field of environment and development in any of the UNDP programming regions.
Desired skills and competencies:
- Working experience with an international organization is an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of UNDP policies, procedures and practices is desired.
- Working experiences with and/or in developing and middle-income-countries in other regions would be desirable.
- Experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and review, including experience working with statistical software and data visualization tools, including the use of AI tools is an asset.
- Familiarity with UNDP’s Social and Environmental Safeguards Policy and Framework and Human Right Based Approach to programming is an advantage.
- Experience in innovative partnership development and collaboration around key ILM themes is an advantage.
Languages:
- Fluency in English is required.
- Working knowledge of other UN languages, especially French or Spanish, is an advantage.
Travel: Multiple international mission travel per year will be required. BSAFE course must be completed prior to travel.
