The temporary position is located within the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH). Pursuant to Security Council resolution 2793 (2025), UNSOH has been mandated to provide support; primarily to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the Haitian National Police (HNP), and the Haitian Armed Forces in the context of any joint operations with the GSF. Additionally, UNSOH is tasked with delivering technical assistance to the Organization of American States (OAS). The Heavy Vehicle Operator at this level usually reports to the Chief of Unit/Section, Transport or to a Transport Officer. The Heavy Vehicle Operator operates material handling equipment (MHE), engineering equipment, buses and trucks, transporting passengers, cargo and hazardous goods, such as bulk delivery of aviation fuel, diesel fuel, and gas cylinders to various locations within the mission’s area of operation. The temporary position is based in Port au Prince and is located in the Transportation Unit of the Office of the Director of Mission Support. The Incumbents reports administratively to the supervisor of the unit, under the overall guidance of the Chief Transport Section P-5.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority and depending on location, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

• Operates Trucks and Material Handling Equipment (MHE) transporting cargo, passengers and hazardous goods, such as bulk delivery of aviation fuel, diesel fuel, and gas cylinders to various locations within the mission’s area of operation.
• Recovers vehicles at the team sites and throughout the mission area, and transport to a location for repair.
• Assists the workshop in the preparation of trucks for field trips, such as changing wheels, cleaning air filters, and general check-over.
• Driving specialized vehicles, armored vehicles, medium buses and ensure that such vehicles are handled in accordance with the manufactures and Transport guidelines.
• Takes care of the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.; perform minor repairs and arrangements for other repairs and ensures that vehicle is kept clean.
• Makes deliveries of parcels, documents, etc., between the office and institutions, e.g. Ministries, Embassies, Permanent Missions, etc.
• Makes minor purchases and collect urgent purchases from local suppliers as requested.
• Collects goods from the customs with due regard to customs regulations and formalities. May make or collect payment for goods.
• Drives vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel and for the transport of general cargo goods.
• Liaise with Dispatch Supervisor on issues relating to the maintenance of vehicles, including daily entries in vehicle logbooks and ensure that vehicles are cleaned and fueled.
• Ensures that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of an accident.
• Ability to work on shifts and as required by the supervisor. 13.Performs other duties as assigned. Competencies Professionalism: Safely operates heavy vehicles, heavy trucks, Armored vehicles, sedans, heavy and light 4X4 sports utility vehicles (SUV’s), ambulances and pick-up trucks, cargo and passenger van within the mission area, in a timely and efficient manner with respect to all time schedules of transportation plans and requirements. Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Job – Specific Qualification Possession of valid official national commercial driving/operator license (category B&C) is required (copy must be submitted together with the application). Defensive armored Driving vehicle certificate is desirable. Safe Technical or vocational diploma or certificate or equivalent on automotive industry is desirable. Work Experience A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in heavy Vehicle/Truck driving is required. Experience in driving armored vehicles and in operating Material Handling equipment is required. Clean driving Record is required Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation or similar international organization or non-governmental organization is desired. Technical knowledge in vehicle repair and maintenance is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
