Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI) seeks a detail-oriented, collaborative, and data-savvy contractor to support our Data & Research team. Our work centers on expanding democratic employee ownership of business as a strategy for racial, gender, and economic equity. The Data Support Contractor will work closely with the Data & Research Strategist and the Director of Research & Impact to strengthen data quality, support reporting, and maintain core data systems across the organization.

About the Role

The Data Support Contractor will work closely with the Data & Research Strategist and the Director of Research & Impact to strengthen data quality, support reporting, and maintain core data systems across the organization.

This role provides operational support to ensure that DAWIs data infrastructure remains accurate, organized, and usable across programs. The contractor will assist with tasks such as data entry, cleaning and preparing datasets, supporting survey tools and data collection processes, maintaining internal data documentation, and helping prepare data outputs used in reporting and analysis.

The contractor will work directly with the Data & Research Strategist and the Director of Research & Impact, supporting priority data operations and system support tasks that strengthen DAWIs ability to track impact and learn from program data.

The Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding democratic employee ownership as a strategy for racial, gender, and economic equity.

Through research, field-building, training, and advocacy, DAWI supports the growth of worker-owned cooperatives and other forms of employee ownership that build wealth and power in historically marginalized communities.

Expectations of the Role

The Data Support Contractor will provide operational support to the Data & Research team across a range of data management, reporting, and data collection activities.

Because the Data & Research team supports multiple programs across the organization, specific tasks may vary depending on program needs and reporting timelines.

Areas of support may include the following:

Data Entry, Cleaning, and Quality Maintenance

  • Conduct data entry across organizational databases
  • Clean, standardize, and prepare datasets for reporting and analysis
  • Perform de-duplication, consistency checks, and validation across multiple data sources
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of records within DAWIs data systems
  • Conduct ongoing record maintenance to support reliable reporting

Data Consolidation and Systems Support

  • Combine datasets from multiple platforms into unified datasets suitable for analysis
  • Support structured data imports and updates across organizational databases
  • Maintain documentation such as data dictionaries, metadata, and data point libraries
  • Help maintain organized and analysis-ready datasets used across programs

Survey and Data Collection Support

  • Build and update digital surveys and forms used for program data collection
  • Process and organize incoming survey responses
  • Track incoming data submissions across programs and maintain dashboards indicating submission status
  • Ensure backend data (records, linkages, field values) is accurate and complete so staff can conduct targeted outreach based on submission status
  • Troubleshoot survey tools and support staff in using them effectively

Analysis, Visualization, & Reporting Support

  • Provide light analysis support using R, SPSS, or similar tools, depending on skills and capacity
  • Prepare charts, tables, and basic data visualizations using Tableau or similar tools
  • Assist with descriptive statistics and data summaries used in internal and external reports
  • Help streamline report production by maintaining organized, analysis-ready datasets

Data Workflow and Systems Improvement

  • Surface observations about data inconsistencies or workflow inefficiencies
  • Assist the team in improving data organization, reporting processes, and documentation
  • Support ongoing improvements to DAWIs data systems and data architecture

The contractor may also assist with other data-related tasks that support the work of the Data & Research team as needed.

What Were Looking For

We are seeking someone dependable, curious, and detail-oriented, with strong foundational data skills and the ability to manage multiple operational data tasks with consistency and accuracy.

This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys working with data systems, improving data organization, and helping teams translate raw data into usable information.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience using Excel and Google Workspace for data cleaning and management
  • Experience creating basic data visualizations, preferably in Tableau
  • Experience working with relational databases or structured data systems
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

  • Experience working with Salesforce, Airtable, and/or Zapier
  • Familiarity with R, SPSS, or similar statistical analysis tools
  • Experience supporting data system maintenance or integrations
  • Familiarity with ethical data management and data security practices

Estimated Time Commitment and Compensation

This is a one-year contract position with an expected commitment of approximately 1015 hours per week. Compensation will be $40-50 per hour, depending on experience.

Work will be performed remotely. The contractor will participate in periodic meetings with the Data & Research team and coordinate regularly via Slack and other collaboration tools.
