Studio in a School (Studio) seeks a highly motivated, collaborative, and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Human Resources Generalist (HR Generalist). As the primary contact for HR operations for administrative employees and artist instructors, the HR Generalist will support recruitment, onboarding/offboarding, training, benefits administration, leave management, compliance, and HRIS improvements and maintenance. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various domains of HR operations and compliance in a union environment while contributing to the growth and success of our organization. This is a full-time, exempt, non-union position, reporting to the Director of Human Resources.

through quality visual arts programs, directed by professional artists. The organization also

collaborates with and develops the ability of those who provide or support arts programming

and creative development for young people both in and outside of schools.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, introductory period, and offboarding for administrative staff and artist instructors, ensuring smooth transitions throughout the employee lifecycle.
  • Facilitate performance management processes, including coordinating introductory period and annual review cycles and maintaining performance documentation. Conduct exit interviews and generate exit interview reports.
  • Coordinate benefits enrollment and management, including preparing communication materials, updating employee benefit information in different benefits systems, and assisting employees with benefit inquiries.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance for benefits, background checks, I-9 verification, labor law posters, ACA, and EEO-1 reporting.
  • Administer leave, accommodation, incident reporting programs, including FMLA, Paid Family Leave, Short-term Disability, reasonable accommodations, Workers Compensation, and OSHA reporting.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date HRIS systems for administrative employees and artist instructors; generate reports and metrics. Partner with Payroll and third parties on new hire setup, terminations, status changes, and benefits deductions.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating employee training programs, including tracking participation, developing and updating training content, and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Contribute to various HR projects, such as HR metrics and reporting, benefits analysis, HRIS improvement , and employee engagement activities.
  • Support in the development and improvement of HR policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations and union contracts.
  • Assist the HR Director with employee relations and union relations activities.
  • Other duties and ad-hoc projects as assigned.

Desired Skills and Background

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Three years of progressive experience in human resources, with at least 2 years in an HR Generalist or HR operations role.
  • HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR) preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and regulations, HR principles and practices, with the ability to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Proficient in ADP Workforce Now or similar HRIS platforms preferred but not required.

Location

We are currently working on a hybrid schedule. The Human Resources Generalist will be asked to work at least 2 days per week in our office at 75 West End Avenue, New York, NY, or in the field, though this schedule may shift and evolve.

Pay Rate

The annual salary range for this full-time position is $65,000-$75,000.
