ABOUT BOSTON IMPACT INITIATIVE (BII)

Boston Impact Initiative (BII) is a nonprofit impact investment fund founded in 2013 working to build a regenerative and equitable economy. We invest integrated capitalequity, debt and grantsin social enterprises and community-owned and controlled real estate to build wealth and asset-building opportunities, especially in diverse communities.

As a new Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), we currently manage two distinct funds:

• BII Fund I: Established in 2017, deployed $6.9M across 50 enterprises
• BII Fund II: Launched in 2022, closed and oversubscribed at $22M, is actively deploying capital to small businesses and community-governed real estate projects in Massachusetts and New England

BII also offers impact investing education and training. Through our Advancing Regenerative Capital (ARC) Fellowship, we have trained 90 fund managers from 38 organizations to launch community-based impact funds focused on expanding shared ownership and generational wealth in communities systematically excluded from economic opportunity. To date, 27 funds have launched that have deployed more than $12M to diverse small businesses across the U.S.

BII is growing to 15 employees in 2026, with a $7M annual operating budget. As we expand our investing and field-building work, we seek a strategic and entrepreneurial Director of Development & Investor Relations to cultivate and steward the resources needed to advance BIIs vision of a future where every community has the resources and power to create shared prosperity.

With Fund II now fully raised, BIIs near-term priority is to securephilanthropic capitalto sustain and grow our operations, support our investment and portfolio management work, and expand our field-building initiatives. Philanthropic funding plays a critical role in enabling BII to provide flexible, risk-tolerant capital, deepen technical assistance to portfolio companies, and advance innovative community ownership models that are not yet fully supported by traditional investment structures.

At the same time, BII continues to steward a strong base of mission-aligned investors and sees long-term opportunity in deepening these relationshipsincluding engaging investors as philanthropic partners where values alignment exists.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development & Investor Relations is responsible for leading and executing strategies to secure the financial resources necessary to sustain and advance BIIs mission.

At this stage of the organizations growth, this role is primarily focused on securing significantphilanthropic capital, including multi-year general operating and programmatic support from foundations, institutions, and aligned donors. This funding is critical to sustaining BIIs operations, advancing its investment pipeline, and expanding its field-building and technical assistance work.

In parallel, the Director will steward and deepen relationships with BIIs existing base of mission-aligned investors, ensuring strong engagement, communication, and long-term partnership. The role also includes identifying opportunities to align investor relationships more deeply with BIIs mission, including cultivating pathways for investors to engage as philanthropic partners where appropriate.

The Director will manage a portfolio of institutional funders, corporate partners, and mission-aligned funders and will work in close collaboration with the CEO, senior leadership, and the Board of Directors. This is a senior role requiring sound judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to build enduring, trust-based relationships across philanthropic and impact investing communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Fundraising and Revenue leadership

• Develop and implement a multi-year development strategy aligned with BIIs organizational priorities.
• Secure significant multi-year general operating and programmatic grants from foundations and institutional funders (six- and seven-figure experience preferred).
• Cultivate and expand corporate partnerships to diversify and stabilize revenue.
• Build and steward a portfolio of philanthropic and mission-aligned partners capable of providing reliable, recurring capital.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to explore and support earned revenue strategies.
• Establish annual fundraising goals and monitor progress against defined benchmarks.

Investor Relations & Capital Stewardship

• Strengthen relationships with existing investors and philanthropic stakeholders.
• Support cultivation and stewardship of mission-aligned investment capital in collaboration with the CEO and investment leadership.
• Partner with the communications team (which reports to BIIs Chief Impact Officer) to ensure consistent investor reporting and engagement.
• Represent BII thoughtfully within philanthropic and impact investing networks.

Board and External Engagement

• Partner with the Board of Directors to advance donor and investor engagement.
• Collaborate with BIIs senior leadership team to ensure consistent and accurate messaging to its funder community.
• Organize and manage investor events, including quarterly investor calls and site visits, in collaboration with BII leadership and the investment team.
• Represent BII externally at funder meetings, community events, conferences, and public forums to enhance its visibility.
• Coordinate with communications team to create compelling messaging for a variety of stakeholders to support fundraising efforts. Drive campaign design and funder communications to deepen engagement.
• Coordinate with communications team to shape crisis communication efforts during times of uncertainty to maintain trust and confidence, providing clear, accurate, and timely updates.

Team Leadership & Operations

• Supervise and mentor development staff (12 direct reports).
• Strengthen internal systems for prospect research, pipeline tracking, and forecasting.
• Oversee grant development and reporting processes.
• Ensure compliance with fundraising regulations and ethical standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

We welcome candidates with a range of experiences and perspectives. The strongest candidates will bring:

• 8+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising or advancement, including at least three years in a leadership capacity.
• Demonstrated success securing substantial multi-year general operating grants and institutional funding.
• Experience cultivating corporate partnerships or institutional funders.
• A proven ability to build and steward long-term funding relationships.
• Strategic thinking and experience aligning revenue strategy with organizational priorities.
• Strong financial literacy and comfort engaging sophisticated funders and investors.
• Experience supervising staff and strengthening development systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High emotional intelligence and a collaborative leadership style.
• Bachelors degree required.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES

• Six- and seven-figure grant experience.
• Familiarity with CDFIs, impact investing, or mission-driven capital models.
• Lived or professional experience working in or alongside diverse and frontline communities (those most affected by disinvestment and/or climate change).
• Commitment to regenerative economy principles and solidarity finance.
• Advanced degree or CFRE certification.
