BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the In ternational Rescue Committee is a lead in g, non-sectarian, non-profit organization provid in g emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance , resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and cloth in g, and work with refugees to help them ga in self-sufficiency.
IN TERNSHIP OVERVIEW : The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) In tern will play a crucial role in support in g community- based VESL program with adult students at vary in g levels of English proficiencies in clud in g preliterate beg in ners. The classes aim to empower students by ga in in g the literacy, language, and confidence needed to navigate everyday life in the US . These skills expand resource accessibility, employment opportunities, and self-sufficiency . Tasks may in clude sett in g up the classroom, mak in g copies, answer in g clients questions regard in g language and culture, assist in g with classroom activities, data entry, and adm in ister in g placement assessments dur in g student registration appo in tments.
LEARN IN G OBJECTIVES : The Vocational English as a Second Language ( VES L) In tern will:
Learn how to effectively manage a class room with students of various backgrounds and English language levels and deliver suppor t services with in the established requirements, to provide the best possible service to vulnerable populations.
Ga in experience work in g with adult learners from a variety of backgrounds, in clud in g those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
Learn about barriers to education for refugee populations and research community resources that support in creased learn in g
Develop critical th in k in g skills, clients service skills, and in tercultural education and social work skills.
Learn about the IRC locally and globally, the available services to refugees and other eligible clients in Salt Lake City, UT .
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attend and observe classes on Tuesdays and /or Thursdays , depend in g on weekly needs
Assist VESL In structor with the enrollment, coord in ation, and implementation of classes, in clud in g:
Attend registration appo in tments and provide support with assessments and data entry
Contact in g students to confirm their availability to attend classes.
Navigat in g client barriers to education
Communicat in g with local adult education services to connect students to appropriate classes
Support teachers in the preparation of the student materials for the classes
Collect data to support educational in itiatives and encourage student success
Arrive a few m in utes early to check in with teacher about the days classroom activities
Assist students with class assignments and help in tegrate digital literacy in the classroom
Help create a welcom in g environment that fosters community and learn in g among program participants while in teract in g with diverse populations
Occasionally p rovide supervision when needed for young children when present dur in g registration appo in tments
Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy, and practice sensitivity to cultural and personality differences of clients by respect in g their beliefs and values.

SUPERVISION & MENTORSHIP:
The in tern will report to and receive ongo in g mentorship from IRC staff
Regular check- in s will be scheduled to review progress toward learn in g objectives to ensure a mean in gful educational experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently pursu in g an undergraduate or graduate degree , or recent graduate ( TESOL , TEFL , or related field , and/or work in g towards receiv in g TESOL/TEFL certification is a plus )
An in terest in or experience with teach in g generally and teach in g ESL specifically
Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable populations, and a desire to help refugees adjust to life in the U.S.
Ability to adapt to different learn in g skills and environments, and a passion for education
Patience, understand in g, and flexibility
Exposure to global environments and languages is a plus
Fluent in spoken and written English
Effective communication skills, especially in a multicultural environment
Engaged in learn in g about the IRC (mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts) and will in g to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
This position is unpaid and reports to the Workforce Development Program Manager .
