Full Job Description
This is a hybrid position that requires 8 days per month in the office. You can be based in our office in The Hague, London, Bogota (Colombia), New Delhi (India), Mexico City, Nairobi (Kenya), and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission, as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position. To be eligible for this position, you must be a resident of any of the countries & cities listed above at the start of employment.
About the Program:
WRIs Communications network aims to expand the institutes reach, reputation and impact. Working as a globally coordinated network across WRIs programs and country offices, we distill complex research and expertise into clear and compelling messages. We leverage a variety of channels including media relations, editorial content, digital marketing and more to inform and engage a growing audience of decision-makers, stakeholders and donors. This position is part of the Core Communications team, which provides communications leadership and support to the entire institute.
Job Highlight: The Writer/Editor position will sit on the Editorial team within WRIs Core Communications program, which oversees the overall strategy and quality of WRIs content. As a Writer/Editor, you will develop compelling and impactful content, primarily for WRI.org, our institutional website. The job will include substantive editing of researcher-written articles, as well as drafting articles, newsletters, web pages, video scripts and other content.
Youll report to WRIs Editorial Director and will join a dynamic, collaborative communications team working across some of the most pressing issues facing people, nature and the climate. Youll have a team of editors and seasoned communications professionals working side-by-side with yothe u; to help ensure were meeting our goals and delivering results.
What you will do:
Editing (50% time)
Review content pitches from program and country communications teams and provide strategic guidance.
Substantively edit content authored by researchers and communications staff including Insights articles, Technical Perspectives, Project Updates, project pages, and other content.
Ensure all content is clear, compelling, and fit for audience.
Work closely with WRIs graphic design and video teams to produce multimedia that supports WRIs written content.
Conduct photo research and draft captions to accompany editorial content.
Project manage editorial pieces, including incorporating feedback from multiple reviewers and seeing projects through from concept to publication.
Writing (30% of time)
Draft articles, web copy, video scripts, brochures, newsletters and other content to support WRIs strategic priorities.
Ghostwrite articles and thought leadership content for researchers and senior leadership.
Content Strategy (20%)
Track analytics for editorial and communications products. Use data-driven insights to inform content development.
Utilize SEO and other digital best practices to ensure wide reach of key materials.
Stay abreast of the news cycle and institutional priorities to brainstorm strategic content.
What you will need:
Education: You have completed a bachelors degree in a relevant study area
Experience:
Experience writing and editing in a professional setting. Journalism experience is desirable.
Experience coaching authors in improving their writing and storytelling skills.
Ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects while under deadline pressure.
Knowledge of AP Style
Experience with SEO and other digital best practices.
Knowledge of and interest in environmental issues, including topics such as climate change, clean energy, food and agriculture, sustainable cities, etc.
Experience working across cultures and geographies is a definite plus.
Languages: Fluency in English in written and oral communications is required.
Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization.
Potential Salary:
The UK Salary range is between 45,000 and 56,000 GBP. The Hague salary range is between 53,000 and 66,000 Euros. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
