Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project Fellow at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) – United StatesREMOTE POSSIBLE

Recruiter: Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA)

This Job Application Has Closed

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) seeks a full-time attorney for a two-year Equal Justice Works Fellowship based in our San Antonio office. TRLA is the largest provider of free civil legal services in Texas, serving 23,000 clients annually across 68 counties. Our mission is to promote the dignity, self-sufficiency, safety, and stability of low-income Texans by providing high-quality legal advocacy.

The Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project is a pilot initiative that embeds attorney Fellows within Financial Empowerment Centers to protect and transfer generational wealth through both financial and legal guidance. The goal of the fellowship is to prevent the loss of intergenerational wealth in communities disproportionately excluded from traditional wealth-building opportunities by providing free legal services, including estate planning, title clearing, and other asset preservation legal needs.

This is an in-person position, and regular, on-site attendance is considered an essential function of the role. While TRLA supports flexibility and may allow occasional remote work where appropriate and with prior approval, consistent in-person attendance is expected.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct legal services to Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) clients in the areas of estate planning and asset preservation, including but not limited to resolving fines and fees, title clearing, and addressing heirs property issues
  • Develop and conduct training and outreach initiatives for Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) clients, including workshops and clinics developed in partnership with local FECs and community-based organizations
  • Build meaningful relationships with community members with a focus on underserved populations, to support their long-term financial goals and promote intergenerational wealth transfer
  • Participate in collaborative learning and professional development through active engagement with the Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project cohort, including contributing to resource exchanges, attending mandatory webinars and conference calls, and participating in training events such as the Equal Justice Works Leadership Development Training
  • Exercise leadership competencies as an Equal Justice Works Fellow
  • Contribute to required programmatic reporting and overall program evaluation
  • Attend training relevant to legacy planning affecting TRLAs client population
  • Perform case maintenance and office tasks, such as opening and closing cases, deadline system, and filing

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school (licensed in Texas or awaiting Texas bar results preferred).
  • Strong commitment to public interest law and advancing racial and economic justice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse staff, community partners, and client populations.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

SALARY AND OTHER BENEFITS

TRLA offers a salary based on experience and an excellent benefits package including law school loan repayment, generous paid leave, health insurance, retirement plans, and training opportunities.

Applications must be submitted through the official careers portal. Female candidates and candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
