General Responsibilities

Perform the daily maintenance and custodial care of two community centersites in Harlem and the Lower East Side, along with AFJs main courthouse offices.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as on-site point of contact during scheduled or unannounced visits from building management, fire department, or regulatory agencies; provide real-time updates to Chief Program Officer.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff and other departments to coordinate maintenance and facility needs.
  • Perform and/or coordinate basic painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general maintenance repairs.
  • Plumbing: Repairing leaky faucets and sinks; unclogging drains or toilets; replacing washers, hoses, and minor fixtures; identifying and reporting larger plumbing issues.
  • Carpentry & General Repairs: Repairing or assembling furniture; fixing doors, locks, and hinges; patching and painting walls; installing shelves, signage, or fixtures.
  • Maintain working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, fire alarm panels, sprinkler systems, and security alarms.
  • Maintain, deep clean, and descale commercial kitchen equipment (e.g., hot/cold tables, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers).
  • Assist with cleaning and general facility upkeep daily, including thoroughly cleaning designated community centers, dusting, sweeping, mopping, kitchen and restroom cleaning, as well of daily recycling and removal of garbage.
  • Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and specialprojects. Stock and maintain supply rooms.
  • Open community centersand interface with staff, Participants, facilitators and volunteers. Secure buildingsat closing.
  • Responsible for the routine servicingand maintenance of mechanical equipment, electrical fixtures, and other equipment at both centers.
  • Inspect buildings and equipment–noting repairsand replacements and reports findings to Chief Program Officer.
  • Maintain adequate levels of janitorial and maintenance supplies, submitting inventory records to Office Manager.
  • Perform all other duties assignedby the Chief Program Officer.

  • Proven self-starter who proactively identifies improvements that enhance safety, functionality, and inclusivity.
  • Flexible and dependable with availability for early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel between NYC locations and communicate via text and Microsoft Teams.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs; safely operate basic tools and equipment.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple priorities across sites.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and regulatory compliance
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to interact respectfully with diverse communities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
  • Bilingual
  • Spanish/English preferred.
