About the Position

The Accounting Strategist (part-time hourly with a minimum of 20 hours per week) supports our Finance and Operations team, providing expert accounting and reconciliation skills critical to managing our financial health. The Accounting Strategist position is new at Industrious Labs and reflects our ongoing growth. This fully remote role reports to the Deputy Director of Operations Alex Kaufman and includes flexible hours suited for candidates seeking balance and impact. The Accounting Strategist will perform core accounting functions and help drive process improvements, supporting both routine activities and special projects. Staff at Industrious Labs actively work to cultivate equity and justice, embracing an explicitly pro-Black and anti-racist organizational culture.

What You’ll Do

You’ll hold responsibilities that will evolve over time as the team grows and functions are distributed. In year one, the role will include:

• • Work closely with a third-party accounting team and facilitate communication between Industrious Labs and the third-party as needed.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations for multiple bank accounts and employee credit cards.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts to maintain financial integrity and accuracy.
  • Record and allocate payroll transactions by department, grant, or other relevant dimensions.
  • Process deposits against invoices and revenue accounts across various programs.
  • Enter and post accounts payable transactions, ensuring proper coding and authorization.
  • Occasionally manage accounts receivable and assist with collections or follow-ups.
  • Generate monthly revenue reports for program leads and organizational leadership.
  • Maintain the general ledger; prepare and post journal entries as needed.

Other key responsibilities include:

• • Prepare draft and final financial statements for management, board, and funders.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process with data analysis and reconciliation.
  • Support finance staff with tax, audit, and assurance preparation tasks.
  • Identify and propose process improvement opportunities for operational efficiency.

The successful candidate will also possess most of the following Core and Preferred qualifications:

Core Qualifications

• • Strong understanding of GAAP principles for for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
  • Experience with accounting platforms, especially Sage Intacct.
  • Demonstrated skill reconciling multiple bank and credit card accounts.
  • Clear and professional communication skillsable to translate financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Values-driven, with alignment to the organizations mission and core competencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• • Professional experience in both for-profit and nonprofit financial settings.
  • Knowledge or practical experience with revenue recognition, especially in grants-based models.
  • Familiarity with billpay platforms such as bill.com.
  • Experience with expense reporting and reimbursement platforms like Expensify or Sage Expense Management (formerly Fyle).
  • Experience integrating data with CRMs (Hubspot, Salesforce) and reconciliation with accounting software.
