ABOUT THE STREET VENDOR PROJECT

The Street Vendor Project is a membership-driven organization that champions the rights of street vendors as small businesses to earn a living and contribute to the culture and life of New York City. SVP envisions a New York City where street vendors thrive as essential entrepreneurs and anchors of community and culture in the five boroughs. Through direct leadership development, education, legal support, and strategic legislative advocacy, SVP builds power and community among vendors.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Street Vendor Project seeks an experienced and dedicatedSmall Business Program Coordinatorto facilitate our small business development and environmental justice work with street vendors. Reporting to the Programs Manager, this individual will provide street vendor small business owners with the tools, resources, and skills needed to grow their businesses while improving their environmental exposure and impact.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach and community engagement:

  • Facilitate informational workshops and presentations on street vendor rules regulations, training on small business management, and onboarding into Hire-A-Vendor’ catering program, both in-person and digitally through webinars, social media, etc.
  • Conduct outreach in collaboration with member and partner organizations, including canvassing in-person and environmental justice data collection. Effectively communicate information about SVPs services, programs and projects to street vendor members.
  • Create in-language materials on available and upcoming small business assistance programs and services
  • Assist in creating materials needed for outreach and stakeholders’ engagement for the Environmental Justice Program to help reach a broad network of vendors and stakeholders on topics including extreme heat relief, alternatives to generators, waste management, etc.

Intake and technical assistance

  • Hold technical assistance consultations with street vendors in-language and/or in coordination with relevant language staff to advise on topics including license and permit applications, bank accounts, taking e-payments, taxes, and using social media to market, both in-person at the SVP office and offsite during street outreach
  • Onboard vendors to Hire-A-Vendor’ catering program and coordinate with vendors and event organizers for event requests
  • Keep log of inbound assistance requests for reporting purposes

Program development and implementation

  • In collaboration with the Programs Manager, develop and implement initiatives and workshops that empower street vendors and supportthe health and vibrancy of their small businesses
  • Expand a pilot program to support food vendors testing new alternatives to gasoline-powered generators by supporting research, data collection, stakeholder management, and outreach/engagement
  • Like most roles in a small organization, this role is flexible and the exact duties may contain other tasks and duties, for example translating, interpreting, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 to 5 years of experience with economic development, small business services, or environmental justice;
  • Excited about working across multiple cultures and is flexible and patient when communicating with people who speak different languages and hold varying levels of digital literacy;
  • Familiar with issues and policies impacting street vendor small businesses;
  • A thoughtful communicator with excellent interpersonal, written, and public speaking skills;
  • Demonstrates a problem-solving mentality and ability to show poise and compassion in engaging with street vendors;
  • A proven project manager with ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects with varying goals and timelines;
  • Experienced in organizing data and developing internal and external communications;
  • Relentlessly dedicated to building the power of working class, immigrant communities of color to incite transformative social and economic justice;
  • This role requires occasional, light physical work as needed, such as moving printed materials, batteries, boxes, and other items around when were hosting programmatic events, or delivering materials or other items relevant to the program;
  • Fully bilingual in Spanish and English (spoken and written), and comfortable conducting outreach, workshops, counseling in Spanish
