LOCATION: Hybrid, Remote START DATE: May 18, 2026 DURATION: 3 months POSITION REPORTS TO: Safety & Wellness Manager and Mental Health Coordinator SCOPE OF WORK: The International Rescue Committee (IRC), works in the United States welcomes newly arrived refugees and immigrants, supports them in their resettlement, and provides holistic services to help them build new lives in their communities. The Safety & Wellness Intern will support IRCs Safety & Wellness Program in providing mental health and psychosocial support services to S&W clients with identified mental and emotional health needs. RESPONSIBILITIES: General Responsibilities could include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide mental health case management services to a small caseload of S&W clients with identified mental and emotional health needs including referrals to mental health services and resources, care coordination, advocacy, and accompaniment to behavioral health appointments as needed.
  • Provide intake assessments and short-term supportive counseling services to a small caseload of S&W clients with identified mental and emotional health needs.
  • Support the implementation of S&W support groups and workshops including outreach to clients and community organizations, curriculum development, group facilitation with the Mental Health Coordinators, interpretation and translation support (if relevant), and other administrative support.
  • Support with ongoing S&W projects as needed including community needs assessments, resource mapping, and partnership-building to support S&W programming. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Student will gain skills and knowledge in mental health case management and basic supportive counseling with forcibly displaced communities. 2. Student will gain competency in the development and facilitation of support groups and workshops with targeted communities. 3. Student will learn how to effectively engage in identifying and building partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders.REQUIREMENTS: Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a masters program in social work, mental health, and/or public health.
  • Professional proficiency in an additional language (Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, and French highly preferred).
  • Based in the US and a US citizen or US work authorization Preferred Qualifications:
  • Interest or experience working with forcibly displaced and/or immigrant communities
  • Interest or experience in providing case management services and familiarity with mental health systems
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate closely with team members and community partners
  • Ability to work in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize various tasks and projects
