Job Summary

In response to Syria's prolonged crisis where 12.9 million people need food assistance, WFP is seeking a GIS Officer. Based in Damascus and part of the Research Assessment and Monitoring (RAM) Unit, the officer will provide critical geospatial analysis to guide WFP's strategic response. You will be responsible for producing high-quality maps, managing spatial data, and supporting evidence-based decision-making to enhance food security assessments, targeting, and overall programme design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of interactive web-mapping applications for effective information management.
  • Produce high-quality maps, dashboards, and spatial data visualizations to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Integrate spatial data with food security, nutrition, and infrastructure datasets for multi-sectoral analyses.
  • Maintain and update the country's spatial data infrastructure (SDI).
  • Collaborate with field offices, programme, and logistics teams to deliver customized GIS products.
  • Update the Integrated Context Analysis (ICA) maps and reports.
  • Develop WFP’s GIS and Remote Sensing capacity in Syria through support and training.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced University degree (Master’s) in GIS, Geography, or a related field; OR a first University degree (Bachelor’s) with additional years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year (with a Master’s degree) or 3 years (with a Bachelor’s degree) of professional experience in GIS/RS and spatial data analysis, preferably in humanitarian contexts.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with geospatial tools such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, or similar platforms.
  • Languages: Fluency (Level C) in both English and Arabic.
