Founded in 2022, the San Francisco Literacy Coalition (SFLC), a project of the San Francisco Education Fund, partners with literacy-focused supplemental reading and writing programs in SFUSD schools to expand equitable access to high-quality literacy supports for PK5 students. Launched by community-based partners in alignment with SFUSDs ELA priorities, SFLC works in schools serving predominantly historically marginalized students who are not meeting literacy milestones.

In 2024, SFLC received a three-year operating grant to deepen and expand its impact across SFUSD. Over the course of this grant period, our goal is to demonstrate meaningful progress toward our outcomes by strengthening and scaling the work of SFLC, positioning the initiative for sustained, long-term funding. Central to this effort is the SFLC Manager, who partners closely with school leaders and literacy providers to coordinate and implement high-quality literacy interventions that support students in reading and writing at grade level.

Reporting to the Director of SFLC, and collaborating with a second Manager, the Managers serve as the primary coordinators of school-based literacy efforts in assigned focal schools. The Managers build strong relationships with school communities, facilitate regular data reflection to assess and adjust services, and ensure alignment with school ELA priorities. Experts in the science of reading, the Managers are deeply embedded in schools and act as key literacy resources.

This evolving role also includes leading professional development, organizing coalition convenings, and supporting special projects that advance SFLCs impact. The ideal candidate is an optimistic, adaptable leader with a continuous learning mindset and a passion for building systems that strengthen literacy outcomes.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Focal School Support & Program Coordination

The SFLC Manager is assigned to 46 focal schools and serves as the primary liaison between schools and SFLC literacy program partners. Key responsibilities include:

• Managing relationships with school teams and literacy providers to ensure effective coordination and implementation of services
• Monitoring student progress and leading data reflection to identify trends, gaps, and areas of need across grades and programs
• Designing and implementing site-based special projects aligned to school priorities
• Cultivating strong, responsive partnerships with instructional coaches, teachers, principals, community school managers, and partner organizations
• Collaborating with the Director and co-Manager to track progress toward SFLCs 2028 strategic plan
• Identifying and supporting the onboarding of new focal schools and program partners

Coalition Leadership & Partnership-Building

In addition to school-based work, the Manager plays a key role in advancing the broader SFLC coalition:

• Serving as a trusted and visible representative of SFLC with partners, stakeholders, and the broader literacy community
• Developing a deep understanding of SFLC partner programs to support alignment with school ELA curricula and program-specific evaluation metrics
• Planning and facilitating professional development focused on the science of reading for educators and stakeholders within and beyond the coalition
• Leading SFLC general convenings, including coordinating with city and district leadership, managing partner and facilitator relationships, identifying timely literacy topics, and overseeing logistics
• Reporting regularly to the Director and SFLC Advisory Committee on school-based trends, challenges, and effective practices
• Building trust-based relationships across diverse organizations through authentic listening, clear communication, and follow-through
• Contributing to special projects and organizational priorities that advance SFLCs mission and impact

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to SFLCs mission and thrives in dynamic, evolving environments. They enjoy cross-functional collaboration while also operating independently with ownership and accountability.

• 48 years of experience in literacy-based program design and delivery, preferably within a nonprofit, school, or district setting, with a focus on PK5 students
• Background in education with deep expertise in early literacy instruction, including teaching, training, and implementation grounded in the science of reading
• Creative and adaptable performer with the ability to bring structure and clarity to ambiguous situations and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
• Experience serving in a school-based role as a literacy support professional or instructional partner
• Strong data analysis skills, including leading data reflection processes with educators and stakeholders to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
• Highly effective interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trust, influence without authority, and manage relationships across diverse stakeholders
• Excellent project management and presentation skills
• Previous management or leadership experience, including successful lateral management and stakeholder influence
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex ideas to diverse audiences and follow through consistently and independently
• Familiarity with the San Francisco education landscape is a plus
