JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

Mott Haven Community High School is a transfer school located in the Samuel Gompers Educational Complex in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Transfer schools are small, academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education programs designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school. East Side House, Inc. is directly responsible for the administration of the Mott Haven Community High Schools Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships.

Under the supervision of the Department Director of Learning to Work Programs, the Program Director, with latitude for independent judgment, will be responsible for performing each essential duty satisfactorily at the school, providing oversight in this partnership with the support of staff. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and ability required, but not limited to:

Essential Functions

    • Oversee all daily operations of the program.
    • Develop collegial relationships with School Principal, DOE staff and other community-based organizations, funding agencies, resource organizations, technical assistance providers
    • Directly provide quality Supervision of East Side House support staff through monthly group meetings as well as individual meetings to discuss performance, strengths and challenges.
    • Oversee student recruitment, assessment, attendance, and follow up
    • Developing weekly quantitative and qualitative reports on program performance that includes attendance, post-secondary options and workforce development
    • Maintain and organize all required records and files according to organizational and contractual requirements and applicable regulations.
    • Manage budget (non-personnel) and submit requests in accordance with fiscal policies
    • Hire/dismiss program staff and communicate staffing needs to Department Director.
    • Initiate and organize functions such as special events, performances, parent events, field trips, etc.
    • Analyze service delivery strategies and develop continuous improvement plans.
    • Provide program data for requested reports.
    • Ensure that program staff follow through on all planning, budgetary, scheduling and implementation tasks.
    • Attend monthly School/ Community based meetings, administrative meetings, program trainings, staff development, and participate in and/or lead professional development trainings.
    • Meet monthly with Department Director to receive and provide updates on programming and administrative tasks.
    • Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.

Additional Responsibilities:

    • Provide oversight and management of the ESDSVP (Extended School Day School Violence Prevention) Afterschool State Grant at Mott Haven Community High School via East Side House.
    • Maintain and Manage Partnership between MHCHS and East Side Houses Post Secondary Pathways Program (PSP).

Requisite Education & Experience

    • Bachelors degree required
    • Masters degree preferred with at least 2 years of experience in youth-related work.
    • Experience in program administration including staff supervision and program implementation.
    • Knowledge of youth development principles.
    • Experience developing and managing relationships.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of community service/development.
    • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
    • Strong presentation skills and the ability to represent the organization.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with program and school staff.
    • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and other applications.
    • Bilingual a plus

Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will supervise assigned personnel, including front line staff and/or support staff.

Expected Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday and some Saturdays.: Flexible hours required between 9AM and 9PM during Fall and Spring semesters.

Travel

Travel is primarily locally during the business day.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
