Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the UN Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHAs mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. The Gender Equality and Inclusion Section supports the vision of a humanitarian environment in which people caught up in crises feel safe and respected and can access the protection and assistance they need without fear of exploitation or abuse by any aid worker, and in which aid workers themselves feel supported, respected, and empowered to deliver such assistance in working environments free from sexual harassment. To help ensure robust, efficient, and accessible systems are in place to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation, abuse or sexual harassment allegations, the Gender Equality and Inclusion Section works towards the implementation of the IASC PSEAH Vision and Strategy 2022-2026 together with inter-agency partners. Furthermore, the Gender Equality and Inclusion Section supports OCHA leadership in mainstreaming PSEA in the operationalisation of transformational priorities as articulated in OCHAs strategic plan 2022-26. As part of IASC and OCHAs commitment to strengthening support to humanitarian leadership on PSEA, the Section manages the Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Capacity Project (PSEACap). The PSEACap project centrally employs and deploys PSEA Coordinators in high-risk contexts. The Gender Equality and Inclusion section provides substantive policy guidance and technical support to these coordinators and country teams, enabling them to assist humanitarian leadership at the country level. The intern will support the Gender Equality and Inclusion Section on project management, report writing. She/he will report to the Humanitarian Advisor on PSEAH. Tasks will include:

  • Co-manage the PSEA helpdesk and respond to request for support from field offices
  • Support in managing the PSEA Coordinator Community of Practice
  • Update web-based platforms for information sharing, including internal SharePoint and public facing websites
  • Provide inputs for various reports/updates
  • Draft meeting notes and action points
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of the IASC Vision and Strategy on PSEAH.
  • Prepare talking points for OCHA leadership’s meetings with various stakeholders. This position is located in New York, in-person, remote and hybrid, full-time and part-time. The intern is expected to work 34 hours per week.
