Work Location

This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located in the Office of the Assistant-General for Human Resources (OASG OHR) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC), in New York. The intern will report to the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General or the Human Resources Officer.

  • Participates in preparing user requirements and other technical specifications.
  • Assists in the design, development and installation of information systems.
  • Undertakes analysis of well-defined modules within the system, develop enhancements and new features to existing systems; may design and implement small, stand-alone systems as needed (e.g. to meet individual user requirements).
  • Undertakes rigorous testing and proving of applications software.
  • Maintains assigned portions of systems, providing operational support for systems applications, analyzing and implementing system changes/upgrades, etc.
  • Writes and develops programs to interface with existing systems.
  • Ensures data security and integrity.
  • Prepares, updates and maintains systems documentation and related technical/procedural manuals.
  • Assists in the set-up and monitoring of software performance measures.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelors degree or equivalent). Educational background or exposure to human resources, public administration or related issues is desirable. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masters or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelors, Masters or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Excel and MS Teams.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Information

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For in-person internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant visa status (such as F-1 or J-1 visa), will be required to obtain a G-4 visa for a full-time (at least 35 hours per week) internship. Candidates who are on a non-immigrant visa status as students such as F-1 or J-1 visa with an employment authorization will only be able to intern on a part-time basis.
