The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is the interface between global policies and national action, translating internationally agreed goals and mandates into national programmes and policies. DESA supports countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and collects, compiles, and analyses data on economic, social, and environmental developments worldwide to inform policy decisions.

Job Summary

This internship offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to gain hands-on experience in international development and international cooperation and sustainable development. Working with Department of Economic and Social Affairs, you will contribute to meaningful projects that address global challenges and promote sustainable development. You will develop valuable professional skills while working in a multicultural, international environment alongside experienced professionals.

Work Location

This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Expected duration

2 – 6 months

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet on of the following requirements:(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). (c) knowledge of Python, R or similar is desirable. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masters or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software application, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts in desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable. Ability to develop software in Python or similar programming languages is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
